Annual Scientific Conference  2007

 

This year's conference continues the theme of psychiatry in the Pacific Rim.  The venue is the Aggie Greys Lagoon, Beach Resort & Spa, (near Apia), Samoa.

The IAP Scientific Conference for 2007 will be held in Apia, Samoa.  Its theme is Psychiatry in the Pacific. During the weekend we will hear speakers with experience in psychiatry in the developing Pacific region examining approaches which bridge the gap between Western and traditional treatment of mental illness.

On Friday we will have a guided tour of Apia and its surrounds.  This will include a visit to an old peoples' home at Mapuifagalele.  The home is renowned for its holistic and respectful care of elderly Samoans.

On Saturday morning we will hear Dr Satu Viali, Dean of the Oceania University of Medicine, University of Samoa orienting us on health in Samoa.

Dr Ian Parkin, Australian psychiatrist, resident in Samoa , patron of Samoa's LifeLine will  speak on Psychiatry in Samoa.

Dr Uli Bardulis will discuss his experiences in psychiatry in the Solomons.

Saturday afternoon we will hear from Naz Remtella and Paul Hill, Remote Mental Health workers in Central Australia, speaking on assessment and treatment  of somatisation in Indigenous Australians.

On Sunday, Dr. Abhyankar, Child and Adolescent psychiatrist in Darwin will discuss psychiatry in a cross cultural context.

Dr. Russell D’Souza will speak on spirituality and psychiatry followed by a panel on traditional healing which will include a Samoan traditional healer and Dr. Elaine Kermode,  who has a special interest in this area and Dr. Anne Noonan who is a Jungian psychoanalyst on Western traditional healing. 

There will also be informal discussions on the side effects of neuroleptics with posters supplied by Dr. Yola  Lucire, a forensic  psychiatrist.

Dr.Naveen Chandra will give information on volunteer psychiatry.

Possibilities of visits to a Samoan church to hear the splendid Polynesian polyphony and the local hospital.
